Council recognises that gambling is a lawful activity that can provide entertainment, recreation and socialising opportunities. While the majority of people who gamble do so without experiencing adverse effects, some people gamble excessively and experience a variety of personal, family and financial problems.
The goal and long-term commitment of the Responsible Gambling Policy for 2013-18 is to reduce the negative impacts of gambling, in particular electronic gaming machines (pokies) gambling. Council has six roles in relation to the policy including land owner, regulator/planner, advocate, partner, community educator and researcher.
The policy is based on a review of the previous policy, regulatory changes, the policy environment and context, and consultation and research to identify goals, objectives and strategies.
