Boroondara Arts is bringing the NGV Kids on Tour activities to you at home.

We have a range of interactive and creative activities for kids and teens to celebrate the NGV Kids Summer Festival.

Boroondara Arts will provide you with the instructions and template - but get in quick as we have a limited amount available for each activity. We can arrange for them to be sent to you via Express Post (for a small fee) or you can click and collect from the Box Office at the Hawthorn Arts Centre from Tuesday 18 January 2022.

Activities

Art: We are mermaids 

Yolŋu artist, Djerrkŋu Yunupiŋu’s fascinating story about her life as a mermaid before she was born is retold in this making activity. Children learn the story and then make a diorama set by adding their drawings to the scene.

Participants will need to provide coloured markers and scissors.

Suitable for ages 4+

Game: Collecting Maypal

When artist Siena Mayutu Wurmarri Stubbs was a child, she loved spending time with her family hunting different varieties of shellfish known as maypal in Yolŋu Matha (the language of  Yolŋu people). In this board game children play a collecting game and find out about different maypal and where they live along the way.

Participants will need to provide scissors.

Drawing game: Noisy Birds! Dhawuḻuŋguḻ Ŋutu’ Wäyin Malanynha

Who am I? Children discover some of Siena’s favourite birds from Arnhem Land, and learn their names in Yolŋu Matha (the language of Yolŋu people) in this guessing and drawing game.
Participants will need to provide drawing paper, coloured markers and scissors.

Craft: Paper Jewels

This making activity takes inspiration from the National Gallery of Victoria’s collection of jewellery. Children create something precious when they make a paper necklace featuring imagery of gold, diamonds and pearls.

Participants will need to provide scissors and glue.

Collage: Style a look with Aurie Indianna

Guided by Aurie Indianna, a Melbourne-based Fashion Stylist, young people can make a start on their art folios. Teens learn about styling and gain insights into what happens behind the scenes when they put together a ‘look’ for an imagined celebrity.

Participants will need to provide paper, coloured markers, scissors, glue and assorted magazines.

Suitable for ages 12+

Photography: Shooting in the dark with Tom Blachford

Teens can learn Tom’s tried and tested techniques for composing a photograph and transforming an image from day to night using existing applications on a smartphone.

Participants will need to provide their own Smartphone or similar device.

Activity book: Art for the whole family

Explore art and design, play games with friends and family and turn the school holidays into days of creativity with NGV’s ‘Art for the Whole Family!’ activity booklet.

Participants will need to provide a variety of stationary to complete the activities.

About the Artists

Eunice Djerrkŋu Yunupiŋu is a contemporary Yolŋu artist from Yirrkala, North-East Arnhem land in the Northern Territory. You can see her children’s exhibition at the NGV, ‘The Gecko and the Mermaid:  Djerrkŋu Yunupiŋu and her sister’.

Siena Mayutu Wurmarri Stubbs is a Yolŋu author, filmmaker and artist. She draws inspiration from her culture and her connections to the land, including her homeland, Bawaka, East Arnhem Land.
Aurie Indianna is a Melbourne-based Creative Director and Fashion Stylist who frequently collaborates with musicians and artists on their music videos and photo shoots.

Tom Blachford is a Melbourne-based photographer, who travels the world to photograph architecture at an unusual time of day – midnight. Tom’s work has been featured in Architectural Digest, Wallpaper Magazine, Vanity Fair, Vogue Living and i-D Magazine among others.
