OUTAGE: Website maintenance April 2024

Our website will be unavailable from 5 to 8 pm on Tuesday 23 April due to planned maintenance.

If you want to hold a street party, you’ll need to:

  • close the street, including the footpath, nature strip and road
  • apply to Council for a Residential Street Party Permit.

The permit gives you permission to close your street safely. We will work with you to close the street and arrange traffic management.

What you need to know about holding a street party

  • A street party can only be held by people in residential properties.
  • You must be at least 18 years old and live on the street where the party will be held.
  • You’ll need to show support from 75% of your street's residents to apply for the permit. (We’ll work out the total number of signatures you need to meet this requirement. You’ll need to send us their names, addresses and signatures.)
  • There are some things you can’t do at a street party, including setting off fireworks, staging a rock concert or advertising the street party to non-residents.
  • Street parties are covered by our public liability insurance, but some activities – including jumping castles, children’s rides, animal rides and hiring security staff – aren’t covered. You’ll need to organise your own insurance for these. View the full list of restricted items and activities on the Street Party Permit Conditions page.
  • You can’t sell food or drink. If alcohol is consumed it must be done according to relevant laws.
  • Street parties can last up to 6 hours, including set up and pack down, but they must finish by 9pm, even on a weekend.
  • Street closures may not be more than 200 metres.
  • Street parties can’t be held on public holidays unless you organise your own traffic management. See more on this below.

Conditions

You must understand and agree to our Street Party Permit Conditions when you submit your application.

Step 1: Apply for a permit 6 weeks before the party

We can service a maximum of 6 street parties on any day and we assess applications in the order we receive them. Sometimes there’s high demand.

Reserve your preferred date 6 weeks before your street party by emailing our customer service team at [email protected] with these details:

  1. Residential addresses for the start and end points of your street party (for example, 1 Boroondara Street to 16 Boroondara Street).
  2. Date of the party
  3. Start and end time.
  4. Contact name, email address and phone number for the street party organiser.

Step 2: Complete your application and pay for your permit

If there are no issues with your proposed street closure, we’ll reserve your preferred date.

We'll email you an application form, a signatories list and your invoice. We’ll include a map showing the area impacted by the street party and the total number of signatures you need to send us.

  1. Complete the application form and the signatories list and email these to [email protected] up to 2 weeks before the date of your street party.
  2. Pay the $100 fee within 4 weeks. This covers a non-refundable administration cost of $30, plus $70 to install and remove signs and barriers.

We’ll email the permit to you within 5 business days of receiving your completed application and signatures. At our end, we’ll organise the installation and removal of barriers for your street party.

Alternative option: Provide your own traffic management

If you can’t reserve your preferred date, or you want to hold your street party on a public holiday, you need to provide your own traffic management through an accredited traffic management company.

You must send us:

  1. A traffic management plan (your chosen traffic management company should provide this)
  2. Your completed application form
  3. Your signatories list
  4. A valid copy of your traffic management public liability insurance certificate with coverage of at least $20,000,000.

You still have to pay a non-refundable $30 administration fee but we’ll waive the $70 installation fee.

Step 3: Contact your neighbours 2 weeks before the party

Because there will be outdoor activity and a street closure during your street party, you need to let other residents in the street know what’s happening. Use the example letter under Downloads, below.
