Colour is the most important element in painting for me. To some artists, tone or other things are important, but colour, I think without colour, there is nothing, there’s no life at all.

I tend to be a frustrated chemist, I like making my own paints for two reasons in that I love the chemistry of pigments and the colour. I also find that I can get colours that people find difficult to get in terms of paints in tubes these days.
