Nellie - Sustainable Transport Officer City of Boroondara
The Boroondara Active and Safe Schools program is an annual program we run with local schools through VicRoads Community Road safety grant funding and council also contributes. We work with local schools to look at how they get to school and we survey the community and then we assist them to make sustainable and safe choices.

Nola - Year 7 and 8 Coordinator
I think there's a greater awareness about concerns around travelling safely to school, I think there's a promotion of that active travel to school which has been really good to see. The smoothie bike day is fabulous today because it's actively encouraged students to ride their bikes and we're really lucky that we've got access to bike paths so that's safe for them to be able to do that and get to school.

Tobi - Student
We got together and discussed what was the real problem with public transport and we surveyed the school and most people said that the bus was the main issue, so we surveyed the people that take the bus to see how late it is and so eventually after a lot of hard work, we got an extra bus added.

Daria - Student
We talked to the company and we told them our problem and we asked them to change and it took some convincing but we did it eventually.

Nola - Year 7 and 8 Coordinator
The program's been fabulous I think what I've really enjoyed about being part of the program is the student voice. So the students are really taking control of the project they've identified problems that they can see with travel to and from school and they've been the ones that have brainstormed solutions to those problems so it's been great to see them take on the project and really run with it.

Amy - student
We've made Posters to put up around the school making the school aware and an action that we're going to be doing later on this term is making booklets for our Year Sevens next year.

Nola - Year 7 and 8 Coordinator
I think it's a fabulous opportunity for the school and for the students involved in the program too, so I really recommend it.

Amy - student
I think my favourite part of the BASS program was being able to make a change for the students at our school.

Daria - Student
I learnt to, I guess, work as a team and bring my ideas to life.

Find out more and register your school for the BASS program on our ride and walk to school page at www.boroondara.vic.gov.au/travel-to-school or email [email protected].
