Keeping men connected and healthy

Men’s Health Week reminds us of the importance of social connection.

If the COVID-19 pandemic showed us anything, it is how important our social networks are for our health and mental wellbeing.

This is particularly important to consider as we approach Men’s Health Week (13 to 19 June), because according to research commissioned by Beyond Blue, Australian men aged 30 to 65 “experience more loneliness and have smaller social networks than women in the same age bracket”.

The good news is, there are plenty of opportunities to connect with your local community in Boroondara. From joining a sports club, to visiting a men’s shed or volunteering, there is something for everyone.

Local dad David Stanford has been involved in the Hawthorn Citizens Junior Football Club for 7 years, including 4 years as club president.

“We offer an opportunity for parents to get involved with their children and to be part of a socially based community football club. We recognise that sport plays an incredibly important role in people’s overall wellbeing,” says David.

“Our club operates on the support and involvement of parents, which creates connections with so many people and creates a nice community spirit. I grabbed a coffee this morning and saw 4 people I know through the footy club and had a chat with each of them.”
