His major keyboard collection, Sonata d’intavolatura, was published in 1716, and in the same year he joined the Jesuits. From 1717 until his death, he was a member of the Jesuit mission to South America, serving as music director in the “Reductions of Paraguay”, in the region covering the junction of modern Paraguay, Brazil and Argentina. Despite his sophisticated Italian Baroque musical background, Zipoli composed for the missions in a lively and approachable style popular with the local converts. A number of these compositions were dedicated to the founder of the Jesuits, St Ignatius Loyola, including the Missa a San Ignacio – one of several works recently discovered in manuscript form in South American collections. , City of Boroondara [email protected] Australia/Melbourne public
