The Hawthorn Arts Centre has been the beating heart of Hawthorn for more than 130 years. Designed by prolific architect John Beswicke, its flamboyant Second Empire façade has been witness to many municipal celebrations over the years. To secure the longevity of the Hawthorn Arts Centre, architectural studio Atelier Wagner has been engaged by Council in recent years to take on a series of projects to ensure its façade, clocktower and many function rooms inside are maintained, preserved, and enhanced to respond to contemporary requirements. This Open House Melbourne weekend, Boroondara Arts has invited architects David Wagner and Jacqui Wagner from Atelier Wagner to share insights on how they have maintained, adapted, and extended parts of the Hawthorn Arts Centre to ensure it remains at the heart of municipal celebrations for many years to come.
