Featuring compositions and arrangements by Lamine Sonko, a Melbourne-based Senegalese artist, this performance will traverse the rhythmic intricacies and harmonious melodies of traditional West African choral music. Boroondara’s own Camberwell Chorale, led by the legendary Doug Heywood OAM, join with Lamine and unfurl their beautiful voices to complete the experience. The show is a choral exploration of the philosophies of Senegalese poet, scholar and former president, Leopold Sedar Senghor, one of Africa’s most significant figures. Leading Senegal to peaceful independence in 1960, Senghor personified the will to transcend barriers without denying them, understand differences and celebrate our common humanity. Featuring songs, stories and of course wonderful music and voices, this promises to be an unforgettable event.
