He visits the same streets in and around Balwyn and the beaches surrounding Shoreham often, sketchbook and palette in hand, always finding something to jot down or paint. Never knowing quite what to expect, he is often surprised by how subtle changes in light and shadow can serve up new subject matter from familiar subjects. Kowalski has been drawing and painting his entire life. Painting outdoors on smaller canvases keeps Kowalski’s work fresh and lively, allowing him to capture the spirit of a place. “I was up on Maling Road, a favourite place to paint, when, late in the afternoon on an autumn day, a streak of butter yellow light cut across the street illuminating just a bit of the shops. I quickly set to capture in paint this perfect moment in time.” -Mike Kowalski Mike Kowalski is the winner of the 2018 Boroondara Arts Encouragement Award, which is awarded annually to an exhibitor at the Camberwell Art Show and recognises excellence in contemporary visual art. The award celebrates and promotes local artists by providing a unique opportunity to exhibit works in the foyer of the Hawthorn Arts Centre.
