Considering the growing number of people operating home-based businesses, we have created a number of online resources to support their unique needs.
Home-based businesses represent a significant portion of the Australian business community; nearly 1 million people run a business from home.
On top of offering flexibility and a sense of autonomy, starting a home-based business can be a great way of launching a new career—which is what Meaghan Thomson did when she set up her creative studio Owl Graphic Design, at her Kew home.
Meaghan had previously worked as a nurse and studied law before taking a break from paid work and studies to raise her four children, then in 2014 she decided she wanted to re-enter the workforce but in a different way.
Having always loved art and design she decided to combine her love of illustration, photography and writing to create a complete service for businesses needed branding, graphic design and digital marketing.
“I wanted to create a business model where I could personally manage all my clients’ branding, marketing and digital needs. Naturally, this meant honing my skills in everything from web development to illustration and design. Not only do I love what I do, working from home allows me to create a rewarding environment that seamlessly integrates my home life,” said Meaghan.
“However, whatever your business model, it’s important to stay connected and up-to-date with the tools you need to ensure success. Council’s Business Boroondara offers an excellent way to meet like-minded entrepreneurs for support and fresh ideas, as well as valuable workshops and networking events”.
