Boroondara Eisteddfod returns

Local musicians return to the spotlight this year in the much-loved Boroondara Eisteddfod.

Spanning 11 weeks, the Eisteddfod features thrilling live concerts and events starting with heats and finals and culminating in a Gala Concert and Piano Concerto Final. Categories include piano, vocal, strings, woodwind, brass, classical guitar, chamber ensembles, large ensembles and choral.

The competition continues to be extremely popular, with the past 2 years having record registrations of about 1,000 entries each year.

The Eisteddfod not only presents a wonderful array of live performances for our community to enjoy, but also helps nurture the talents of budding local musicians. Competitors can improve their artistic skills, as well as their confidence, discipline and self-esteem in a supportive environment.

Anna Gao was the proud winner of last year’s prestigious 2021 Piano Concerto Final.

When asked about winning the Piano Concerto Final, Anna says: “the most special thing was not the winning part, but rather the amazing time I had working with the conductor, Doug Heywood, and the lovely musicians from Camberwell Camerata Orchestra. To play with an orchestra was something I’d thought I would never be able to do, but Boroondara Eisteddfod has given me this wonderful opportunity and helped me reach this dream.”

Anna has a long-held passion for piano, and recalls practising after school every day while growing up in Sydney. She has continued to play and now studies at the Melbourne Conservatorium of Music.
