Completed in  May 2017.

About the project

As part of Council's Hartwell Shopping Centre Improvement Plan, the Council commissioned Juddy Roller Collective artist Dvate to present an historic motif of the neighbourhood dating forward from the local flora and fauna representing bushland existing pre-settlement.

You then travel to the opposite side of the mural by steam train, conjuring memories of the Outer Circle Railway. The former Regal Theatre, once proudly standing at the corner of Toorak and Camberwell Roads, appears as if emerging from the wall. Its elegant art deco styling is also reminiscent of the stylish trains of the 1930s which were designed to invoke a sense of speed and progress.

Also featured is what is rarely found today, a motor repair shop where they come out to service your auto and an American Maid ice cream shop - all celebrating Hartwell’s rich built and social history.

Local residents are encouraged to spend a little more time on site to pick out a memorable message that appeared on the bridge for many years.
