Project status

Works commenced on 7 April 2021.

About the project

Boroondara is home to almost 50 local shopping villages which add to the vibrant atmosphere of our city. Our Shopping Centre Improvement Plan identifies opportunities to improve streetscapes at 42 centres across the municipality.

Highfield Road, Canterbury has been selected as the next shopping village within Boroondara to undergo improvement works as part of our Shopping Centre Improvement Plan.

The works will seek to enhance the appearance and character of Highfield Road Shopping and create an attractive, pedestrian-friendly centre where people want to shop, relax and spend more time.

This will include:

  • Public spaces for sitting, relaxing and outdoor eating.
  • Enhancing the green, leafy character and streetscape appearance.
  • Improving pedestrian amenity with new footpaths, street furniture and trees for shade.

To create some of these new public spaces and garden beds, it is proposed to widen the footpath in a section of the shopping centre by removing excess length from the existing 90 degree parking bays.

The works commenced on Wednesday 7 April 2021 and are expected to be completed within 5 weeks, weather permitting.

During construction

To ensure the works are completed as safely and efficiently as possible, it will be necessary to restrict parking adjacent to the work area as required. Pedestrian access to shops will be maintained during works.
