Attributable to Cr Jane Addis Mayor, City of Boroondara:
It is disappointing to see the Member for Kooyong’s announcement to withdraw funding from all three commuter car park proposals in the City of Boroondara.
Council has been engaging with the community during a two-month consultation process and a Council Meeting was scheduled for 15 March 2022 to hear all community submissions; this meeting will now be cancelled following today’s announcement.
A substantial investment of public funds has been used to complete the feasibility analysis for each of these car parks and it would have been more appropriate for Council to determine which of the three projects progressed, if any.
It is acknowledged that concerns were being raised by a number of residents living close to the potential sites and Council was looking forward to hearing those concerns directly from residents at the 15 March meeting. It also has to be noted these projects were set to provide many benefits to Boroondara residents, traders, daily commuters in Melbourne and hundreds of businesses at our Camberwell, Glenferrie and Canterbury shopping centres.
Council maintains the view, all concerns and benefits should have been considered at the 15 March Council Meeting before a decision to pull any funding was made by the federal government.
I thank the Council officers who have been working tirelessly over many months to finalise preliminary feasibility studies and consultations with the Boroondara community and I thank the Boroondara community for providing their feedback during the extensive consultation process.
