The City of Boroondara’s new Tree Protection Local Law will strengthen the protection of significant and canopy trees on private land within the municipality.
Cr Jim Parke, Mayor of Boroondara, said that the new local law, adopted by Council on 22 August, included a series of changes which will toughen Council’s enforcement capabilities, which add additional offences, improve the replacement planting requirements and bring the local law into line with current industry definitions.
“The development of the new local law was informed by internal expert reviews, community feedback, benchmarking against equivalent local laws in other metropolitan councils and detailed analysis of the operation of the current local law.
“Boroondara is one of a handful of councils which has control over the removal of trees on all private property throughout the municipality. This local law is an important mechanism to protect healthy trees and to require replacement planting where trees are approved for removal,” Cr Parke said.
The new Tree Protection Local Law will come into effect on 26 November 2016.
