The City of Boroondara welcomes a commitment by Planning Minister Richard Wynne that a proposed housing development in Markham Avenue Ashburton must comply with the Victorian Government’s Better Apartment Design Standards.
Council met with the Minister last week to discuss the development proposed by Places Victoria for the site in Markham Avenue.
Council outlined its concerns about the proposal including the incomplete planning application and the non-compliances with the Boroondara Planning Scheme and the Minister’s own newly released guidelines for new apartments.
“The meeting was positive and constructive. It was pleasing to hear that the Minister has an open mind to Council and community concerns,” Cr Phillip Healey, Mayor of Boroondara, said.
“We reiterated Council’s desire to remain the responsible authority so that the community can engage and exercise their rights, including appeal rights.
“We requested that the Minister provide Council with the opportunity to review and comment on revised plans and the planning scheme before a decision is made, and agreed to respond promptly given the tight timeframes associated with the project.
“Council wants to work with the Victorian Government to deliver a process and project that can truly be a demonstration of a collaborative approach and best practice design that provides much-needed public housing and the best outcome for our community,” Cr Healey said.
