The City of Boroondara is encouraging residents to nominate outstanding volunteers for the 2019 Boroondara Volunteer of the Year award.

The award seeks to recognise the efforts of people who live and volunteer in Boroondara and acknowledge an outstanding member of the community for their local impact.

Nominations for the award are open to the public on 13 August and will close at 5pm, 15 October 2018.

For Cr Jim Parke, Mayor of Boroondara, the award is an opportunity to celebrate the generous spirit of the Boroondara community.

“More than a quarter of our community generously volunteers their time to make a difference in the lives of others.

“I am proud this award recognises the people in our community who go about their work quietly – their efforts deserve to be celebrated.

“If you know an outstanding Boroondara resident who is making a significant local impact, I encourage you to nominate them for the award,” said Cr Parke.

In the City of Boroondara alone, 26 per cent of the Boroondara population (35,999 people) reported they perform voluntary work compared with 17.6 per cent for Greater Melbourne in the 12 months prior to the 2016 census. This is an increase of 4,969 people since 2011.

The award is run by the City of Boroondara’s Volunteer Resource Centre, a service which connects volunteers with local community organisations. Each year, over 1,000 Boroondara volunteers are referred to local community organisations which rely on volunteers to deliver and support their community programs.

All nominations will be considered and assessed by a panel comprised of councillors and local community organisations.

The winner will be announced at the International Volunteer of the Year celebration organised for volunteers on 5 December 2018.
