Council is extremely disappointed the Legislative Council did not get a chance to vote on the motion to revoke Amendment C251 yesterday.

We appreciate the effort of the Shadow Minister for Planning David Davis MP and the community to prevent a highly inappropriate development at Markham Estate.

We will continue to scrutinise the plan and try to achieve the best outcome for the public housing tenants, neighbours and the broader community.

We do not support the Victorian Government’s tactic of sidelining our community from the normal planning process and we believe the plan submitted by Development Victoria has significant flaws.

The Victorian Government’s Public Housing Renewal Program (PHRP) is fatally flawed – it manifestly short sells the Victorian public in the delivery of public housing. The Victorian Government is selling large swathes of publicly owned land for private development to facilitate the delivery of very little new public housing.

Council calls on the Victorian Government to defer any future decision on public housing redevelopment until the Legislative Council’s Standing Committee on Legal and Social Issues release their parliamentary inquiry report on the PHRP in March 2018.
