Modern chamber group The Letter String Quartet will grace the stage at the Hawthorn Arts Centre on Saturday 23 April for Oracle Marker, a concert of original works for string quartet, voice and electronics.
The Letter String Quartet is made up of four eclectic musicians who play, sing and compose for the ensemble: Steph O’Hara (violin and vocals), Lizzy Welsh (violin and vocals), Zoë Barry (cello and vocals) and Biddy Connor (viola and vocals). The featured compositions have been commissioned specifically for the ensemble.
The Letter String Quartet comes to Hawthorn Arts Centre off the back of performances presented by the Melbourne Recital Centre. Featured composers include Evelyn Morris and Wally Gunn, with pieces designed to showcase the innovation and originality of the quartet’s individual musicians as well as the ensemble as a whole.
Each member has worked as a musician in many styles and forms – from baroque and chamber to jazz, experimental and impro-drone. At times provocative and challenging, The Letter String Quartet produces modern chamber music at its intimate best.
Viola player and vocalist Biddy Connor has composed, arranged and performed for a diverse range of projects including film, television, theatre, large-scale community events and installations. In 2016 she was a finalist in The Melbourne Music Prize Outstanding Musicians Award.
Biddy successfully received funding from the Australia Council (Skills and Arts Development) to travel to a Boxohouse, Joshua Tree Desert, California in February 2014 to collaborate on the video ‘Stranger’ with visual artist Megan Evans.
“Australia’s new music dream team” – Matthew Lorenzon, Partial Durations
“Prior to seeing Heart is Racing, I’d never seen musicians who both played instruments and sung. It gave the performance a distinctly modern and relaxed feel, analogous with being invited into the host’s living room rather than escorted to your allocated seat in the salon.” – Raphael Solarsh, ArtsHub
Hawthorn Arts Centre presents an exciting and varied arts program and is home to performance, exhibition, workshop and events spaces. Visitors can enjoy refreshments at the Events Bar or explore Hawthorn and discover the area’s culinary delights.
