The English Conversation Club provides people who speak English as a second language the opportunity to improve their English with the help of a qualified tutor. Each week the participants practise speaking English in a friendly and safe environment at free sessions in libraries across Boroondara.
The City of Boroondara is home to approximately 45,000 residents from 150 countries who speak 116 languages at home, making the weekly get-together a wonderful initiative that creates opportunities for our culturally and linguistically diverse community.
The English Conversation Club welcomes people from a diverse range of backgrounds including Chinese, Japanese, German, Russian, Spanish and so many more. It brings people together to make new friends and learn about different cultures.
“When I came to Australia, I knew nobody. One week after I arrived I went to the English Conversation Club. I was afraid to talk to people but in the class I felt safe. I could ask questions and get answers. The teachers create a friendly environment, but also share their life experiences, which is very helpful to us,” says group member, Nami from Japan.
“It is a great chance to learn about Australia. We get a lot of encouragement. I am a housewife and I get very little chance to talk to people as I am at home and I don’t know many people, but here I can talk. This class opens people up,” says group member, Jennifer from China.
