Bellevue ward Councillor Jim Parke has been elected Mayor for the 2017-18 Council year.

Cr Parke thanked his colleagues for the honour of representing the City of Boroondara as Mayor and said he was happy to be back as the Mayor.

This is Cr Parke’s second term as Mayor. He was last Mayor in 2015-16.

“I would like to acknowledge the work of the outgoing Mayor, Cr Phillip Healey, who has led the Council over the last twelve months through its digital transformation, through the community consultation for our ten-year community plan and who has led our advocacy on issues such as North-East link and the Victorian Government’s public housing model,” he said.

“This advocacy on the community’s behalf will continue into the new mayoral term and I look forward to continuing the work of Cr Healey to ensure that our community’s voice is heard on these major issues which have the potential to impact the lives of people living in Boroondara.

“I am also looking forward to opening some much-needed community facilities over the next twelve months.

“In the coming year, we will deliver a state-of-the-art library in Balwyn and the much-anticipated North-East Community hub, a facility that will bring together a neighbourhood house, library lounge, expanded Maternal and Child Health Centre, the Greythorn Early Childhood Centre, allied health services and the North Balwyn RSL,” he said.

Cr Parke congratulated Cr Garry Thompson who will chair the Urban Planning Special Committee over the next twelve months and Crs Felicity Sinfield and Cynthia Watson who will share the chairing of the Services Special Committee in the coming year.

“These are important roles and I am delighted to have councillors of the calibre of Crs Thompson, Sinfield and Watson to take up these positions,” he said.

Cr Parke and the chairs were sworn in at a special council meeting this evening.
