At Council meeting on Monday 26 February 2018, a motion put forward by Solway Ward Councillor, Cr Garry Thompson, was unanimously carried to request the Victorian Coalition Opposition, Victorian Greens and minor parties to support a revocation of Planning Scheme Amendment C298 in the Legislative Council.
The Minister for Planning approved Amendment C298 on 31 January 2018, a new amendment for the redevelopment of Markham Estate in Ashburton, to replace the previous Amendment C251 which was revoked by the Victorian Upper House in November 2017.
Mayor of Boroondara, Councillor Jim Parke, said that Amendment C298 has not addressed the core issues previously raised by Council, the community, the Coalition Opposition and minor parties since the previous revocation.
“We are extremely disappointed that the Victorian Government has chosen to ignore the concerns that led to Parliament revoking the previous planning scheme amendment for the Markham Estate and has approved a new amendment that still fails to address the key issue of Victoria’s unsustainable shortfall in public housing,” Cr Parke said.
“Amendment C298 should not be allowed to proceed without proper consultation with Council and the community.”
Solway Ward Councillor, Cr Garry Thompson, said that the Victorian Government has made a decision without consulting Council and depriving the local community of a say through the normal planning process.
“The Victorian Government should let Council get on with the job of being the responsible planning authority for this site. There is no reasonable reason to strip Council of its usual planning powers and deny the residents natural justice through their third party appeal rights.”
“We call on the Shadow Minister for Planning, the Hon. David Davis MLC, the Victorian Greens and minor parties to once again help us to set things right and revoke Amendment C298.”
