In celebration of National Meals on Wheels Day on Wednesday 30 August 2017, a number of City of Boroondara councillors are joining volunteers in delivering meals to local Boroondara residents.

Councillors Lisa Hollingsworth, Garry Thompson, Cynthia Watson and Steve Hurd are taking part in meal deliveries this year, at different addresses across Boroondara.

Councillor Hurd, who will be helping volunteers make deliveries in Hawthorn East, said:

“National Meals on Wheels Day is a day for recognising and thanking our volunteers for their commitment and dedication.

Last year, some 350 volunteers delivered meals to more than 500 City of Boroondara residents, allowing them to continue living independently in their own homes.”

As well as delivering a wide range of nutritious meals to members of the community who are unable to prepare their own, Meals on Wheels volunteers provide social support, often forming friendships with their clients that last for years.

“Volunteers can also keep an eye on their client’s health and wellbeing, putting family members’ minds at ease,” Councillor Hurd added.

“At a time when things often seem to be becoming more impersonal, Meals on Wheels provides a sense of connection for residents who might otherwise feel isolated from their community.

It also provides opportunities for volunteers to make a positive difference to people’s lives.”
