Today Council hosted a flag raising ceremony at the Camberwell Civic Centre to celebrate the Australian National Flag Day (3 September).

Community members, including local school children, joined with councillors to commemorate the first time the Australian National Flag was flown on 3 September 1901 at the Royal Exhibition Building in Melbourne.

Cr Phillip Healey, Mayor of Boroondara, said that the Merchant Navy Day is also commemorated on 3 September making the event a great opportunity for the community to reflect on two important historic events.

“Today we are also raising the red ensign flag to honour the service and sacrifice of our merchant mariners and to remember the vital contributions made by those who served in the Australian and allied Merchant Navies during the wars,” Cr Healey said.

The Australian flag was raised by the Mayor of Boroondara, Cr Phillip Healey, the Victorian flag was raised by the State Member for Hawthorn, John Pesutto MP and the red ensign flag was raised by joint 2017 Boroondara Citizen of the Year, Jan Dimmick.
