Council invites the community to a flag raising ceremony on Monday 3 September at 10.30am to celebrate Australian National Flag Day.

Australian National Flag Day celebrates the occasion the Australian National Flag was first flown, on 3 September 1901 at the Royal Exhibition Building in Melbourne.

This is the second year Council has celebrated this historic event with a flag raising ceremony. The occasion will be marked with three flags being raised: the Australian National Flag, the flag of Victoria, and the Red Ensign.

Mayor of Boroondara, Councillor Jim Parke said “Please come along and join local school students and Councillors in commemorating this historic event. Since Federation, beneath this flag, Australia has grown and flourished into a vibrant, multicultural country; one which I am proud to celebrate.”

“With the raising of the Red Ensign, we are honouring the service and sacrifice of our merchant mariners and remembering the vital contribution made by those who served in the Australian and allied Merchant Navies.”

The celebration, including morning tea, will take place in the open space in front of the Camberwell Library, 340 Camberwell Road, Camberwell.
