The iconic Camberwell Sunday Market celebrates its 40th anniversary on Sunday 28 August 2016.

Activities for all ages will include buskers, face painters and an ‘Avenue of Thanks’ with displays from various community project grant recipients. The birthday celebration will take place during Market trading hours from 6.30am to 12.30pm.

Since its creation by Balwyn Rotary in 1976, the Market has grown to attract over 250,000 locals and visitors annually. Continued community support for the market through its gold coin donations and stallholders has seen Balwyn Rotary raise $15 million for important causes since its inception. Recipients include the Cit18082016y of Boroondara Community Grants program and Balwyn Rotary’s many charitable projects, both here and abroad.

“For the past 20 years a unique relationship has existed between Balwyn Rotary, Council and the Camberwell Traders. During that time approximately $3.3 million or around 30 per cent of the net proceeds raised at the Market, along with additional support from Council, has funded the Boroondara Community Strengthening Grants,” said Councillor Jim Parke, Mayor of the City of Boroondara.

“These grants have enabled many community groups to implement projects, run events and provide a range of services to meet outcomes valued by the community.

“Balwyn Rotary has also contributed to many Council projects including the Boroondara Literary Awards, Kinder Plus, Boroondara Cares Foundation and infrastructure projects which have benefited the community and Camberwell Traders.”

The Camberwell Sunday Market has long been a must-visit attraction for Melburnians, with its diverse range of stallholders and strong sense of community where attendees, stallholders and volunteers have forged many lifelong friendships.

“I congratulate Balwyn Rotary on this fantastic milestone and thank all Rotarians and members of our community who have contributed to the success of the Market over the past 40 years,” said Councillor Parke.

“As a community, we are proud to call it ours.”
