Boroondara’s best urban design projects will soon be on show as nominations open this week for the 2018 Boroondara Urban Design Awards.

Established in 2011, the awards recognise high-quality urban design and architecture.

Mayor of Boroondara, Councillor Jim Parke, said the awards celebrate excellence in urban design and recognise new developments that sensitively respond to their settings and improve the look and feel of an area.

“Boroondara is a sought-after place to live and the expectations of our community are understandably high when it comes to new development. The Urban Design Awards offer an opportunity to acknowledge and emphasise the role that good urban design plays in preserving our heritage and enhancing the special character of our neighbourhoods,” Cr Parke said.

Nominations are open in five categories:

  1. Best heritage extensions, additions and alterations
  2. Best small-scale residential development - up to three dwellings.
  3. Best medium-scale multi-dwelling residential development - up to three storeys
  4. Best non-residential development
  5. Best apartment or mixed-use development - four storeys and above.

The City of Boroondara is calling for nominations from architects, urban designers, developers and home owners who have had projects completed in the last two years.

A judging panel of two independent experts and three councillors will assess the nominations against a list of criteria that are well-known and recognised by the design and development industry.

“The judging panel is looking for creative and inspiring design that respects and enriches Boroondara’s valued streetscapes and public spaces,” Cr Parke said.

All nominations must be submitted by 21 May 2018, and award winners will be announced at a presentation ceremony on 25 June 2018.
