The City of Boroondara welcomes the Victorian Government’s announcement to remove the Union Road rail crossing in Surrey Hills and build a rail line under the road.
While a plan is in place to remove a second rail crossing in Mont Albert, the Union Road crossing has had significant safety issues with a number of near misses and an incident in 2016 where two people died when their car and a train collided.
Eager to be involved in discussions with the Government about the project, Mayor of Boroondara and Maling Ward councillor, Cr Jane Addis said the Government was to be commended for recognising a need to improve safety at the crossings and reduce local congestion.
Acknowledging the notorious history of the dangerous Union Road crossing, Cr Addis said “Council applauds the Government’s proposal and an opportunity to engage with the Level Crossing Removal Authority (LXRA). This will establish a foundation for strong community consultation and deliver a significant benefit to the Boroondara community.
“We welcome the Government’s commitment to build new train stations at Surrey Hills and Mont Albert, and the train line being lowered to run under Union and Mont Albert roads,” Cr Addis said.
