The City of Boroondara and the Boroondara Library Service is proud to participate in the 1000 Books Before School initiative, in conjunction with the Public Libraries Victoria Network.
This program is designed to encourage parents and carers to read 1,000 books to their children in the years prior to beginning school. Research suggests that reading to preschool-aged kids helps to develop early literacy, and assists with building vocabulary and language skills. These essential skills help prepare your child for school, and help to instil a lifelong love of books and reading.
With each 100 books read, your child will receive a sticker, and will receive a reward at 100, 250, 500, 750, and 1000 books to encourage them to keep going. Rewards include coloured pencils, a photo frame magnet, and bag tags.
Since the launch of this program in February this year, nearly 800 children have signed up to participate across all five Boroondara libraries. So far, over 200 milestones have been reached by various participants -- including two who have already reached their 1,000 book milestone!
While 1,000 books may seem like a lot, it can be easy to incorporate a picture book or two per day into your child’s routine. Thankfully, Boroondara Libraries have over 40,000 children’s picture and board books for you and your family to choose from! More than this, residents and library members are invited to participate in their Children’s Storytime events, available at all libraries across Boroondara.
Every book counts. This includes books read or listened to at bedtime, during Storytime events at your local library, playgroup or kindergarten, and even books that you read multiple times. The program is also not limited to library books, and includes books you already own.
Signing up for this program is easy. Simply head into your local library and enquire in person; you need only be a library member to join in with this free program.
Upon your registration, your child will get a kit to get started -- and then the adventure begins!
