The Victorian Government is implementing a state-wide ban on lightweight plastic shopping bags from 1 November 2019.

The ban applies to all retailers – including supermarkets, greengrocers, bakeries, pharmacies, clothes stores, restaurants, cafes, markets, food outlets and many more.

It includes all lightweight singlet-style (handle) plastic shopping bags which have a thickness below 35 microns, including degradable, biodegradable and compostable bags.

Some lightweight plastic bags are currently exempt from the ban, including produce bags (for loose fruit and vegetable), bin-liner/garbage bags and dog waste or nappy bags.

The Victorian Government has engaged the National Retail Association to help retailers transition away from lightweight plastic bags. Help support our local retailers in adopting this change by remembering to bring reusable bags every time you go shopping!
