Boroondara has joined the 2021 City Nature Challenge. You can join the challenge too and help document the amazing biodiversity in Boroondara.
All you need to do is take photos of any wild plants and animals (either indigenous or introduced) you see anywhere in Boroondara between 30 April and 3 May and upload them to the iNaturalist app.
The City Nature Challenge is a global citizen science competition run by the Natural History Museum of Los Angeles County and the California Academy of Sciences.
We are joining forces with 7 other councils in the Eastern Metropolitan region to collectively take part in the challenge as the ‘Melbourne Eastern Metropolitan Area’. This includes: Greater Dandenong, Knox, Manningham, Maroondah, Monash, Stonnington and Whitehorse.
Our ‘city’ will compete with others around the world to make the most observations of plants, animals and fungi over 4 days.
In 2020, there were 244 ‘cities’ from across 40 countries who took part in the challenge with more than:
- 41,000 individuals participating.
- 815,000 observations
- 32,000 species recorded - including over 1,300 rare, endangered and threatened species.
This is your chance to show the world the amazing animals and plants of Boroondara and help create research quality data for scientists who are working to better understand and protect nature. Data collected as part of the City Nature Challenge may be used in scientific publications or by Council to help us better understand and manage our local biodiversity.
