Drowning is one of the leading causes of death for Australian children, with backyard swimming pools, spas and inflatable pools the most common places where incidents occur.

You can prevent drowning by installing compliant barriers, constantly supervising children and ensuring that your pool and spa barriers meet legal safety requirements and are in proper working order. It is the owner’s and occupier’s responsibility to maintain safety barriers at all times.

An inflatable or portable pool which holds a water depth of 30 cm or more requires a safety barrier that complies with Victorian Building Regulations. You will need to apply for a Building Permit prior to installation.

Kidsafe Victoria has an online assessment app to help check the safety of pool areas.
