Boroondara local, Catherine Phillips is lighting the way for local female athletes with her dual sporting career.

Already a celebrated athlete in Ultimate Frisbee, Catherine Phillips has now entered the women’s AFL league (AFLW).

The Ultimate Frisbee champion made her debut for the Melbourne Demons AFLW team in Round One against Brisbane and is now preparing to take on Collingwood in Round Two at Ikon Park, Saturday 11 February 2017.

Phillips fell in love with sport when she started playing Ultimate Frisbee at the age of 16. Now 25, Catherine has represented Australia at the World Titles in London and received an Individual Sporting Grant from City of Boroondara to represent Australia in the US Open Ultimate Frisbee Championships in Ohio, United States.

Catherine also established the women’s Ultimate Frisbee team, Ellipsis Ultimate in Boroondara three years ago as a way to encourage more women in the area to get involved in the sport.

“Ultimate Frisbee is so welcoming,” says Catherine. “You have girls, boys, adults and children playing together and that’s my favourite thing about it.”

Although Catherine has not played a lot of football, Catherine knows the skills picked up playing Ultimate Frisbee can be applied to the sport, as well as other aspects of her life.

“Playing sport is the most incredible thing in my life. You meet new people, it increases your confidence and improves your communication.

These are all special things you get from playing a team sport,” Catherine says.
