Every day in this City of 180,000 people, I meet a diverse range of individuals young and old, who inspire me with their benevolent spirit and an ambition to make a difference. I’m sure you do too.
This is why I am pleased to announce that nominations for the 2019 Boroondara Volunteer of the Year Award are now open and nominations for the 2019 Citizen and Young Citizen of the Year awards will open 14 September.
These awards offer an opportunity to salute the efforts of many humble and often unsung heroes who make this City great.
I urge you to take the opportunity to nominate the inspirational Boroondara citizens you believe should be acknowledged for their leadership, contribution and commitment to our City.
Or perhaps you’d like to nominate an outstanding volunteer who deserves to be celebrated for their remarkable efforts.
The 2016 census showed over a quarter of Boroondara residents volunteer compared with 17.6% for Greater Melbourne. This is the highest volunteer rate of any metro council.
We support our volunteer community through our Boroondara Volunteer Resource Centre, which refers 1,000 volunteers to local community organisations each year through its referral service and skills bank.
Through a range of free events, workshops and initiatives, the centre also supports 350 local community organisations to deliver their volunteer programs.
This year, Volunteer of the Year will be celebrated on International Volunteer Day (5 December 2018) and the Citizens of the Year awards will be celebrated at the annual Australia Day event (26 January 2019).
