Why shopping local is streets ahead

Check out your local shopping strip during Main Streets of Australia Week.

Boroondara is home to 53 vibrant shopping centres and strips – we have wonderful restaurants, bars, cafes and local stores right on our doorstep.

We recently renewed the Boroondara Community Plan 2021-31, our 10-year strategic plan based on the aspirations of our community and the priorities they told us were important. Community feedback told us the local economy remains highly valued and is an area of focus for Council.

The COVID-19 pandemic has significantly affected our community, including local businesses and traders. As we reopen and reconnect, it’s important we continue to get behind Boroondara businesses.

Main Streets of Australia Week is a national campaign running from 16 to 22 May. It celebrates everything main streets and town centres contribute to the community, such as:

  • providing jobs to those who rely on local or flexible work
  • creating local spending
  • supporting local causes, charities, sporting groups and schools
  • providing a place for the elderly or vulnerable to interact with the community
  • building connection and providing safe spaces
  • supporting households financially through their small businesses.
