In the early 1990s, a collaboration was formed between a group of community members, organisations and Council to plan and build Hays Paddock Playground in Kew East.
The playground was opened in 1998 as one of the first inclusive playgrounds in Australia – a trailblazer for its time. Inclusion and ‘side-by-side’ play for children of all abilities has always been at its heart.
We recognise the strong sentimental connection our community has with this iconic play space and are keen to ensure this remains for years to come. Due to its age and condition, renewal works are required to help revitalise the playground and continue its legacy.
In December 2021 and January 2022, we consulted leaders and experts in the disability sector and members of our community to understand what they value about the current playground and how it could be improved.
Council wishes to thank the more than 160 community members who shared their views to help inform the draft concept design for the renewed playground.
We are pleased to share the draft concept design with our community. It reflects a playground that will remain inclusive for people of all abilities and includes a new custom timber play structure, a new sandplay area, and water play – all based on what our community told us is important to them.
You’re now invited to view the draft concept design and share your thoughts by late-July. To do so, please visit our Hays Paddock Playground consultation page on the Engage Boroondara website.
