Laneway upgrade trial set to boost safety

Council will trial a laneway upgrade near Camberwell Primary School, linking a local carpark to a street crossing on Camberwell Road and creating a buffer space for the community.

As part of planning for the Camberwell Junction precinct, the thoroughfare between Butler Street carpark and Camberwell Road will be closed temporarily to road traffic in late-2022, allowing pedestrians to walk safely from the carpark to a street crossing that reaches both Camberwell Primary and Boroondara Civic Centre.

It will also create a buffer space for the community to connect – great for waiting for school pick-ups and for lunch breaks at work. Council will create this space by installing safety bollards, painting the road vibrant colours and adding seating.

In this project, we will test ideas that aim to improve the safety, accessibility and inclusiveness of our public places. If the results are positive and it achieves our aims, we can use this approach to improve other locations in our City. This pilot laneway upgrade also gives the community a taste of what’s possible in Camberwell Junction’s placemaking project.

In late-2021, Council engaged the community to hear what your hopes were for the precinct. We’re now using demographic and socio-economic analysis to review the results and better understand your needs. In the next stage of placemaking, we will share your vision for Camberwell Junction’s future.
