Boroondara libraries go fine free

Libraries are a much-loved Council service, which is why Boroondara Library Service no longer has fines for overdue items.

We have seen how important our library services are to the local community, particularly during the challenges of the past year. Moving to a fine-free model removes barriers and encourages people to return to their local library, and new members to join, so that everyone can enjoy our services.

As part of this initiative, an outcome of Council’s 2021-22 Budget, outstanding overdue fines for library items are wiped – meaning you can start anew at your local library without a backlog of overdue fines.

Now is a great time to join or reconnect with your local library for a wide selection of books, DVDs and online resources, along with study facilities and programs for all ages. You can join for free online.

Why cut fines?

According to the Australian Public Library Alliance, library fines undermine the provision of free and universal access to information.

People who can least afford to pay fines are often the ones who need the library service the most, and there is no evidence that overdue fines encourage meaningful compliance.
