Sustainability events

Become a backyard scientist

Each year we support initiatives where you can get involved to help monitor the health of our wildlife and their habitats. It’s a great way to get outdoors and connect with nature, as well as discover the unique wildlife in our own backyard. Have fun and help protect our local animals by joining the following events.

Aussie Backyard Bird Count

Support the annual BirdLife Australia’s Aussie Backyard Bird Count, running from Monday 21 to Sunday 27 October 2019.

If you don’t have a backyard, don’t worry, you can count birds in your local park, school yard, along creeks, in the main street of your suburb - in fact, anywhere in the urban area.

By counting the birds you see, you can help BirdLife Australia determine the type of bird species that live where people live. It provides them with a vital snapshot of Australian birds at the same time each year, giving an indication of trends in our bird communities and the health of our environment.

Register for the Aussie Backyard Bird Count.

Did you know? Last year, over 2.7 million birds were observed nationally. In Boroondara, 263 residents recorded 9,119 birds and 74 different species!
