Boroondara Library Service

More bang for book clubs

Book clubs are vital to supporting literacy in Boroondara and offering a way for community members to meet and socialise in a welcoming place.

While there are many titles with multiple copies in the Boroondara Library Service collection to cater to book groups, our staff have found that Book Club borrowers are sometimes unable to get multiple copies of their preferred title during a specified timeframe. Our initiative, Book Group Kits, has recently been developed to solve this issue.

Program Director, Lisa at Kew Library, has built a number of Book Group Kits with 20 different titles to choose from.

Book Club participant, Fiona, is delighted by the new program and the impact it has had on her group.

“Our Book Club has been together for 18 months and initially began as a way of reconnecting with friends from our children’s primary school,” Fiona said.

For us, being involved in a Book Club is about being part of a community activity which is fun and social.

“The kit has been wonderful because it provides each group member with their own book, a list of discussion questions, audio tapes and the opportunity to read topical sources of literature by different authors. Now, each member doesn’t have to source their own book,” she said.

The process is simple. Groups send a Book Group Kits enquiry to Book Club Program Director, Lisa via the Ask A Librarian portal. When the books are next available, members can simply collect the reserved kit in an easy to carry bag from the Kew Library.

Kits are issued for 60 days.

Fiona said the best part is that the group can return the kits to any Boroondara Library during opening hours.

“The libraries team then takes care of the rest for us, where they return the kit to Kew Library for another group to enjoy.”

The Book Group Kits have been a great success so far, with positive feedback received from many Book Club members.

“The new kits have been so popular, so we are looking to expand the program as a result, with more titles and kits to be added to the collection,” Lisa said.

We encourage more Boroondara book clubs to take advantage of this fantastic program.
