Fresh ways to play in new-look playgrounds

A children's playground with a big, climbable rocketship as the feature

Each year we renew playgrounds of all shapes and sizes to enhance play opportunities for children and families.

There’s plenty to love about Boroondara’s most recently upgraded playgrounds. Here’s your guide to what’s new near you.

Lift-off for ‘Rocket Park’

The iconic 1960s rocket play piece at Central Gardens playground has been restored to its former glory as part of this redevelopment. Rocket Park, as it’s known by the local community, has been a Hawthorn landmark since 1966. After comprehensive restoration works to improve its safety and structure, the renewed rocket made its journey home and the lunar-themed playground reopened to the public in mid-September.

It’s an ideal set-up for budding young astronauts, with its new design based on what our community told us was important to them. Surrounding the rocket are space-travel-inspired features including a ‘mission control’ centre, ‘Mars landing terrain’ including rocks and mounds, new monkey bars and a play unit, a variety of swings, a water play zone, space-themed shade covers and better access throughout.

You can view the rocket’s restoration journey and learn more about this new playground on the Central Gardens Playground page

Victoria Park Regional Playground

As part of the Victoria Park Concept Master Plan, we upgraded the northern playgrounds at Victoria Park in Kew to a new regional playground.

It too reflects the needs and aspirations of the community, with exciting new features proving popular among children of all ages and abilities, and elements for adults too.

For the kids, you’ll find nature play and sensory planting, a new 4-metre-high tube slide, a bamboo forest, a sandpit and water-play area, Ninja Warrior-style elements like jumping pads and a rope scramble net, a flying fox, swing sets and more.

For the adults, a fitness station and dedicated seniors’ exercise park are new additions.

Local playground upgrades

Deepdene Park playground has a new train-themed play unit for children of all abilities. You’ll also find new swings, nature play, monkey bars and a track glide, and an upgraded all-weather social area with barbecues.

Coming soon

Balwyn’s Hilda Street Reserve will soon have a new combination unit with a rope bridge, catwalk, swings and a fire pole.

There will be a spinner and more opportunities for nature play as well.

We’re looking forward to delivering more new playgrounds in the 2022–23 financial year, including Hays Paddock playground, Grovedale Park playground and Mary MacKillop playground. Visit Engage Boroondara and use the search bar to find out more about these projects.
