Coronavirus update 13 March 2020

COVID-19 restrictions: what's closed and what's open.

Some of our services may be closed or have different hours for the public holiday on Friday 23 October.

Want to improve your English conversation?

English Conversation Club is held regularly at our libraries for adults wishing to improve their English language speaking, pronunciation, and vocabulary.

All sessions are free and provide our community with a safe and friendly forum to practise speaking English in a group setting, with the help of a qualified volunteer tutor.

In addition to giving attendees a space to practise their English conversation, the group also provides an opportunity for attendees to form new friendships and build connections within their local communities.

Experienced tutor, Di Juracich, said that for those who speak English as a second language, English Conversation Club often becomes an important support network.

As well as participants gaining a lot from their experience with the club, volunteer tutors also find the experience rewarding.

Liz Gibson, who tutors English Conversation Club at Kew Library, said she takes great pride in seeing the gratitude students share for the help they receive through the classes.

“I have learnt so much about different cultures and the different reasons people have for coming to Australia,” said Liz.

“It’s great to be able to help build attendees' confidence in speaking English.”

Sessions run weekly throughout school terms from 2pm to 3pm on Monday at Camberwell Library, Tuesday at Ashburton Library, Wednesday at Hawthorn Library, Thursday at Balwyn Library and Friday at Kew Library.

No bookings are required, so please drop in to a session most suitable to you.
