A new artwork promotes reading at Boroondara Library Service

New Hawthorn Library community art

When next at the Hawthorn Library check out the new eye-catching community art piece at the back of the library.

The artwork, made from hundreds of recycled bottle tops, is a collaboration between library staff and children at
St Joseph’s Primary school, Hawthorn Early Years Preschool and preschool storytime as well as artist in residence at
Hawthorn’s Town Hall Gallery, Naomi Bishop.

The project evolved after library staff put the word out to Boroondara library members, staff, and local kindergartens seeking materials.

The response was overwhelming with children collecting and sorting hundreds of the colourful bottle tops that make up the colourful art screen.

The piece provides a practical solution to enlivening a dull and unused space at the library, transforming it into a popular place to hold children’s programs.
