Message from the Mayor, Cr Jane Addis

While for all of us Melbourne, Victoria and Australia is our home, it is in the streets and neighbourhoods of our municipality where we truly live our lives.

This is why I am honoured and excited to be elected Mayor of our much-loved municipality for the next 12 months. And it is why I will work to protect and enhance what makes Boroondara uniquely ours.

First I want to thank my good friend Cr Garry Thompson, whose Mayoral term coincided with such difficult times for our community. He remained positive, constructive and kind throughout, and a driving force for complex and vital projects like the Climate Action Plan and Boroondara Community Plan, which will underpin our municipality and our lives.

I am particularly looking forward to helping activate items in the Climate Action Plan – it is in the detail and individual efforts that this will come to life – and to working to implement the Boroondara Reconciliation Strategy 2022-26. Our Placemaking projects will help revitalise our local shopping precincts as we recover from the economic and social fallout of the COVID-19 pandemic.

If the pandemic has a silver lining, it must be the very local focus set by the 5km travel limit that opened our eyes to what is literally on our doorsteps. It was heartwarming to see so many enjoying our parks and gardens as common ground when we were finally able to meet with friends and family outdoors. I thoroughly enjoyed picnics with friends, and hope you are inspired by our article highlighting Boroondara's favourite picnic spots

Now it is time to reclaim our indoor spaces too – the Neighbourhood Houses, community centres and libraries that nourish learning and community, the arts venues that inspire and connect us through art and performance, and the leisure facilities that keep us active and healthy.

Let us celebrate our municipality, and all work together to build a stronger Boroondara.
