Message from the Mayor, Cr Garry Thompson

I am truly honoured and humbled to have been elected Mayor and am very much looking forward to working with our new group of Councillors and the City of Boroondara on the many initiatives we have in train including:

  • $80m in capital works projects to meet community needs including the new Kew Recreation Centre and a new community precinct in Canterbury
  • Continued funding of COVID-19 support and relief activities
  • Minimising our environmental footprint by investing more than $4m on a range of initiatives including furthering our municipal climate action plan.

Our Council will be driven by a desire to enhance our open spaces and accessibility, and to protect our biodiversity, heritage and amenity. We have some great work underway such as our Municipal Wide Heritage Gap Study, and purchase of 100 per cent clean energy.

Our experience of COVID-19 has sheeted home the importance of having outdoor spaces, walking trails and sporting fields to enjoy. Our health and wellbeing are more important than ever before, and this is intrinsically linked to our environment: where and how we live.

I am committed to building on the special qualities of Boroondara, home to 180,000 residents. We have taken significant steps to realise the vision of our customer first program, which will provide a personalised customer experience in line with a smart cities approach. This means people will be able to interact with the municipality anytime, anywhere, using any device to access things that are important to them in real-time.

Over the past year, we have seen our community bond over renewed support for everything local, and a revival of community spirit. We are in service to our community. It’s timely to re-examine its needs and aspirations, and truly understand them. I encourage you to tell us what is most important to you now in Boroondara and shape our Boroondara Community Plan.

We have the makings of an extraordinary Council. I am filled with hope and optimism for our community and believe we will leave a positive imprint on the Boroondara community.

Cr Garry Thompson
Mayor of Boroondara
