The City of Boroondara is currently consulting with the community on a proposal to establish Smart Street Reserve as a designated dog off-leash area between the hours of 5pm and 8am, by amending Council’s Order No. 1 (Order) made under Section 26 of the Domestic Animals Act 1994.
This consultation closed at 5pm Sunday 21 October 2018.
Smart Street Reserve is bounded by Smart Street, Church Street, Brook Street and College Street in Hawthorn. The Reserve comprises a relatively small grassed open-space area and is home to a playground, preschool and child care facility.
It is a well-utilised space for unstructured recreational use, particularly related to the playground and walking paths. Whilst it is currently not listed as a dog off-leash Reserve in Council’s Order, it has been used as such by some dog owners over the last 18 months. Nevertheless, other users have understood the Reserve to be an ‘on-leash’ reserve and have used it accordingly.
This proposal to add Smart Street Reserve to the list of designated off-leash reserves responds to interest from a group of local dog owners to make the Reserve off-leash after 5pm and before 8am every day.
