Art can be intellectually challenging, emotionally evocative or simply beautiful.
It has an ability to bring people together through education and entertainment, to help us celebrate and commemorate important events.
It provides opportunities for conversation and debate and, through large scale art projects and festivals it creates jobs and contributes to economic growth.
According to research conducted by the Australia Council, 85 per cent of Australians believe that the arts make for a richer and more meaningful life and 89 per cent believe the arts should be an important part of the education of every Australian.
Art plays a vitally important role in our community, whatever its purpose.
The City of Boroondara’s Town Hall Gallery Art Collection comprises a number of significant works of art, many of which have been donated into the collection by members of our community, including artists or their families.
Our permanent collection is an historical and artistic record of the changing face of the City of Boroondara, visually representing the environment as interpreted by those who have lived in and experienced our local area.
During March at the Lyon Collection exhibition I will launch a new City of Boroondara Art Donation program.
Through this program, we are hoping that we will be able to showcase previously hidden cultural treasures to fill gaps in our current collection and to continue to grow a record of the artistic history of our city.
We are able to accept donations either directly or through the Australian Government’s Cultural Gifts Program, which encourages gifts of significant cultural items to public art galleries by offering donors a tax deduction for the agreed market value of their gifts.
If you believe you have significant works in your collection that could be of value to the broader community, I’d encourage you to contact our Senior Curator Mardi Nowak on 9278 4775 to arrange a viewing and to discuss the eligibility of the works for the City of Boroondara Collection.By increasing our collection, we will be able to expand our yearly exhibition program for the benefit of the whole community.
