Boroondara is a strong and vibrant City offering an outstanding quality of life. It is a highly sought after place to live and there is strong investment in our property market.
Boroondara’s 2015 building approvals, at a total value of $1.2 billion, ranks our City as second highest in Victoria (behind City of Melbourne at $4.6 billion) according to the Victorian Building Authority.
The significant expenditure on development in Boroondara highlights the fact that Council’s planning policies are facilitating appropriate growth rather than locking up the City as some observers claim.
Building approvals issued in Boroondara over the past 12 months include alterations and additions to dwellings, new homes, and other forms of housing and commercial redevelopment. We think the $1 billion figure demonstrates how attractive Boroondara is, with people willing to spend money on their properties.
Boroondara is also attractive to people looking to develop land and there has been considerable effort put in to introducing a range of new controls to help Council ensure proposed developments are appropriate.
Council’s focus is on achieving the best balance between conserving what our community values and supporting the natural process of change which occurs in a suburban location.
Council’s biggest challenge is accommodating this change without destroying the very things which make this City an attractive place for residents to live and I expect that we will continue to be confronted by this challenge in the years ahead.
With best wishes,
Councillor Jim Parke Mayor of Boroondara
