A new year gives all of us a chance to start afresh, to clean the slate of the old year and start new challenges in the new year. And because we live in such a vibrant and multicultural city we get to celebrate the new year twice!

Most of us already rang in the New Year on the first of January, but we also had the opportunity to repeat the event on Saturday 28 January. That’s because it was the start of the new lunar year for the Chinese and Vietnamese communities as they farewelled the Year of the Monkey and welcomed in the Year of the Rooster.

The celebrations for the new lunar year are one of the biggest events in the Chinese/Vietnamese calendar. Celebrations centre on visiting family and friends and, like all great celebrations, they include plenty of good food.

The City of Boroondara has a proud multicultural heritage and strong and growing Chinese and Vietnamese communities. It is wonderful to be the Mayor of such a vibrant city with so many cultural events and festivals across the year.

So to our Chinese and Vietnamese communities, we wish you a very happy and prosperous Year of the Rooster. For everyone else, it is a great opportunity to dust off those New Year’s resolutions – or maybe just a great time to catch up with family and friends again.
